What Sidi Kaouki Is (and Is Not)
Sidi Kaouki is a small village by a long beach, about 25 km south of Essaouira. It is known for surfing, wind sports and beach rides. It is not a resort: there are only a few cafés, restaurants and guesthouses.
Five Things to Know Before You Arrive
- Bring cash. Cards are not accepted everywhere, and you should not count on a cash machine.
- It is often windy. Bring a windproof jacket, even in summer.
- The sea is strong. Swim only when it is calm, and stay close to shore.
- Dress modestly in the village. Swimwear is for the beach.
- Plan your transport back if you come for the day. Buses are not frequent.
Common First-Visit Mistakes
- Forgetting sun cream because the wind feels cool.
- Planning a long beach walk without checking the tide.
- Arriving late in the day out of season and finding cafés closed.
- Trying to kitesurf or surf big waves without lessons.
A Good First Day
Walk along the beach to the marabout in the morning. Have lunch near the beach. In the afternoon, try a horse ride or a surf lesson, then stay for the sunset.
