Sidi Kaouki Travel Tips
Simple advice that makes a visit easier and shows respect for the people who live here.

Money
Bring cash from Essaouira. Small cafés and many local services do not take cards, and you should not count on finding a cash machine in the village. The currency is the Moroccan dirham (MAD).
What to Wear
Swimwear is fine on the beach. In the village and near the marabout, cover your shoulders and knees. Bring a warm layer: evenings can be cool and windy all year.
Respect
- The marabout is a religious place. Be quiet and respectful.
- Ask before taking photos of people.
- During Ramadan, avoid eating and drinking in public in the daytime in the village.
Safety
- Only swim when the sea is calm. Stay close to shore.
- Check the tide before long walks.
- Learn activities with qualified instructors and always wear the safety equipment provided.
- Keep valuables out of sight on the beach.
Sun and Wind
The wind makes it feel cooler than it is, so it is easy to get sunburnt. Use strong sun cream, wear sunglasses, and drink plenty of water.
Language
Moroccan Arabic (Darija) and Amazigh are spoken locally, and French is widely used. In tourist places many people speak some English or Spanish. A simple "salam" (hello) and "shukran" (thank you) go a long way.
Leave No Trace
Take your rubbish with you, especially plastic. Do not drive on the dunes outside guided tours, and keep your distance from animals.
