What the Beach Is Like

The beach starts below the village and runs south for kilometres. It is wide, flat and sandy. At low tide it becomes very wide, and you can walk for a long time along the water.

There are no big hotels on the beach. Near the village you will find a few cafés and, at times, straw parasols. Further south it gets quieter.

Tides

The tide makes a big difference here. At low tide there is a lot of firm sand, which is best for walking, horse riding and camel rides. At high tide the beach is narrower and the waves come closer.

Check a tide table before a long walk so you do not get cut off near the rocks. Local providers plan rides around the tide.

Waves and Wind

Sidi Kaouki is an open beach break, so there are waves most of the year. Winter usually brings the biggest swell. The wind is often strong, especially in the afternoon, which is why kitesurfers and windsurfers like it.

For surfers, mornings are often better. Read surfing in Sidi Kaouki for more.

Can You Swim at Sidi Kaouki?

Sometimes, but be careful. This is an open ocean beach with waves and currents, and there are rocks in places. There may be no lifeguards.

  • Only swim when the sea is calm.
  • Stay close to the shore and never swim alone.
  • Keep children close.
  • If you are not sure, ask a local or a surf school.

The Marabout

The white building on the rocks at the north end of the beach is the marabout of Sidi Kaouki, the tomb of a local saint. The village takes its name from him, and people come here to pray.

You can look at it from the beach. Please be quiet and respectful nearby, dress modestly and do not climb on the building.
