The Short Answer

Sidi Kaouki does not have bars, clubs or a busy evening scene. Evenings are for dinner, conversation and an early night, which suits people who surf or ride in the morning. If you want nightlife, Essaouira has more to do.

The Sunset

The beach faces west, so the sun sets over the sea. It is the busiest time of the evening on the beach: walkers, surfers coming out of the water and people watching the light. Bring a jacket, because it gets cool and windy quickly once the sun goes down.

The light gets warmer in the late afternoon, before the sunset.

Dinner

There are only a few places to eat, and some close early or keep shorter hours outside the busy seasons. Many guests eat at their guesthouse, which often cooks dinner if you ask in advance. Tagine takes time to cook, so order early.

  • Ask your guesthouse in the morning if they can cook dinner.
  • Check café opening times during the day, not at 9 pm.
  • Alcohol is not served everywhere.

After Dark

Street lighting is limited outside the centre of the village, and the beach is very dark at night. Bring a torch or use your phone light, and avoid walking along the water at night when the tide is high.

Getting Back to Essaouira

If you are on a day trip, the evening return is the part to plan. Buses are not frequent, and the last one may leave before or around sunset. Taxis are easier to arrange in advance than to find late in the evening. Agree a pickup time with your driver, and do not pay for the return in advance. See how to get there.

Making the Most of an Evening

  • Do your activity in the afternoon, then stay for the sunset.
  • Have an early dinner near the beach before heading back.
  • If you want a calm night under the stars, stay overnight. Read what to know before staying overnight.
