The Short Answer
A first lesson usually starts on the sand, then moves into the shallow white water close to the shore. You learn to paddle, stand up and fall safely. Most people do not stand up every time in their first lesson, and that is normal.
Before the Lesson
What to tell the school
- That it is your first time
- How well you swim
- Your height and weight (for the board and wetsuit size)
- Any health problems or injuries
- Children's ages, if they are coming
What to bring
- Swimwear
- Towel
- Waterproof sun cream
- Water
- Warm clothes for afterwards
- A light snack

On the Sand
The instructor checks the sea and chooses a safe area. You get a wetsuit and a soft beginner board. On the sand you warm up and practise lying on the board, paddling and the movement to stand up. You also learn how to hold the board and how to fall without hurting yourself.
In the Water
Beginners stay in the white water: waves that have already broken near the shore. The water is usually shallow enough to stand. The instructor helps you choose waves and gives tips after each try. You will fall a lot. Each time, stand up, hold your board to the side, and try again.

Safety
- Always follow your instructor and stay in the area they choose.
- Hold your board away from your body, never between you and a wave.
- When you fall, cover your head with your arms.
- Stay out of the water on big days unless you are with your instructor.
- Tell the instructor if you feel tired or cold.
How to Choose a Lesson
Ask about the length of the lesson, the number of students per instructor, what equipment is included and how the school decides the time of day. For your first lesson, a small group or semi-private lesson is often a good balance. Compare the formats in private or group surf lessons.

After the Lesson
You will probably be tired and a bit sore. Drink water, eat something and rest. Two or three lessons over several days usually help more than one long lesson. When you are ready, see the surf lesson options, and read surfing in Sidi Kaouki to understand the waves.
