The Short Answer
Group lessons are a relaxed and social way to start. Private lessons give you the instructor's full attention, which helps if you are nervous or want to improve fast. Semi-private lessons, shared only with your own small group, sit in between.
The Three Formats Compared
| Group | Semi-private | Private | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who is with you | Other students | Only your friends or family | Just you |
| Attention | Shared | Shared within your group | All for you |
| Good for | First-timers, solo travellers | Couples, friends, families | Nervous beginners, improvers |
| Cost | Usually lowest per person | In between | Usually highest |
Group sizes and prices depend on the school. Ask before you book.

Group Lessons
Pros
- Usually the lowest price per person
- Fun and social, a good way to meet other travellers
- Less pressure, as attention is shared
Cons
- Less individual feedback
- The pace follows the group
Semi-Private Lessons
A semi-private lesson is for you and the people you choose. You learn together, at a pace that suits your group, and the instructor knows everyone's level. It works well for couples and families, as long as everyone is at a similar level.
Private Lessons
Pros
- Feedback on every wave
- The lesson follows your pace and goals
- Good if you are nervous in the water
Cons
- Usually the most expensive option
- Less social

How to Choose
- Complete beginner, travelling alone? Start with a group lesson.
- Couple, friends or family at the same level? Try semi-private.
- Nervous, or want to progress quickly? Book a private lesson.
- Not sure? Start with a group lesson, then add one private session to work on your mistakes.
